Saving $ at the Grocery Store #2

How many coupons can I use? Are there limits?
Each store has its own coupon policy. You'll need to know the rules at each store, and unfortunately, they vary. But knowing these rules is crucial to successfully using coupons, so here are the policies at all our major chains.

  • Food Lion: accepts coupons but does not double; no limits.
  • Kroger: accepts coupons and doubles manufacturer's coupons up to 50 cents. No limits on number of total coupons or identical coupons.
  • Harris Teeter: accepts coupons, will double manufacturer's coupons up to 99 cents. Limit of 20 per transaction doubled; limit of three identical coupons per transaction
  • Lowes Foods: accepts coupons, will double manufacturer's coupons up to 99 cents. Limit of 20 per transaction double; limit of four identical coupons per transaction.
  • Wal-Mart: accepts coupons but does not double. No limits.
  • Pharmacies: (CVS, Kerr Drug, Rite Aid, and Walgreens) Accept coupons, do not double, no limits.
It's also beneficial to know how each store runs their sales. For instance when Kroger runs a BOGO (buy one, get one) you have to buy the specified amount. (i.e. BOGO 10/$10 Avocados - you have to buy 10 to get the sale price) However, Lowes Foods and Harris Teeter don't require you to buy the specified amount to get the sale price (i.e. BOGO 2/$5 Garlic Bread - you can buy one for $2.50).

I took a coupon class last year and learned so much about the art of couponing. Coupons had always been part of my shopping, but now am much more organized. I made my own notebook (a zippered one is the way to go!) using baseball card holders and dividers. Much better than taking a stack of coupons in the store and flipping through! So far this year I have saved almost $400 at Lowes with coupons and store specials. Seeing the total drop at checkout is worth all the work! Happy couponing!

I believe Kroger has changed their policy to where you don't have to buy 10 to get the deal. But you do have to have your rewards card.
